A look at 2018

Governor races in 2018

The 2018 election has a surprising number of governors up for reelection.

House races in 2018

What the 2018 House elections mean for the 2020 Critical Election

There are currently 58 seats separating the two political parties after the 2018 elections.  Thus Democrats would need to take 28 seats for a tie, 29 for the majority.  Obviously the preferred path would be to win this many seats in 2018.  But again, the Realigning Election in 2020 is the bigger prize, so even if they get part of the way there in 2018, that will help.

Democrats are expected to target the Senate seats in Nevada and Arizona. Democrats could also target Texas. Republicans are expected to target Democratic-held seats in Indiana, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, and West Virginia, all of which voted for Mitt Romney in the 2012 election and Donald Trump in the 2016 election, as well as, seats in Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan, all of which voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 election. Republicans could also target seats in Virginia, Maine, and New Jersey.] Other races may also become competitive.

2018 is very real -- as is the possibility that Republicans could get a filibuster-proof 60 votes in the Senate.

There are 25 states where Democrats have incumbent senators up for re-election. Traditionally Republican states in which Trump won by double digits in November; West Virginia, North Dakota, Montana, Missouri, and Indiana, all of who will face very steep odds of re-election.
As Republicans compile their target lists for 2018, these five -- Manchin, Heitkamp, Tester, McCaskill and Donnelly -- will certainly be at the top.

Democrats will also have seats up in traditional swing states, including Florida, Ohio, and Wisconsin, and now Tim Kaine will also face re-election in closely divided Virginia in 2018.

These are critical seats for us to keep in the U.S. Senate.

If even one justice among Ginsburg, Kennedy and Breyer leaves the bench while Trump is in power, there will be a majority for radical changes in constitutional law.

Of the 25 senators up for re-election, 13 are from states Trump captured or narrowly lost. Among those are Maine, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, which hadn’t backed a GOP presidential candidate since the 1980s, leaving both parties trying to discern how much Tuesday may have reordered the lineup of blue, red and swing states. Five Democrats are from states Trump easily carried, by 19 percentage points or more — Indiana, North Dakota, West Virginia, Missouri and Montana.
